Diagnositic value of serum bile acid estimations in liver disease.

Bile acid concentrations were estimated enzymatically in fasting and postprandial (two-hour) serum samples from 18 normal subjects and 30 patients with histologically proven hepatobiliary disease. The serum bile acid concentration was less than 15 mumol/1 in normal subjects and did not increase postprandially. The fasting serum bile acid concentration was raised in 27 of the patients with hep...

Itch in Liver Disease: Facts and Speculations

Pruritus in hepatobiliary disease is commonly believed to be caused by retention of bile acids with their sequestration in the skin. HOwever, we have recently demonstrated that skin levels of bile acids in patients with cholestasis correlate poorly with pruritus. In this report, we present additional data concerning the relationship of pruritus to bile acid retention: (1) the urinary excretion ...

Determination of serum bile acids in hepatobiliary diseases by gas liquid chromatography (fasting serum bile acid levels and endogenous bile acid tolerance test).

The methods and results of a gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of bile acids in serum are presented. The analysis of bile acids in serum involves enzymatic hydrolysis (cholylglycine hydrolase), preparation of propionated methyl ester derivatives of bile acid and gas chromatographic procedure with 2. 5 % OV-1. Adequate separation of the individual bile acids, (cholic, chenodeoxycholic and deox...

Role of hepatobiliary scintigraphy in bile leak diangnosis [Persian]

Hepatobiliary scintigraphy is a sensitive method for intra & extera hepatic bile leak diagnosis. Bile lead may be seen after hepatobiliary surgery, trauma, inflammatory disease or malignant neoplasms. Although sonography and CT scanning are useful for diagnosis of peritoneal or perihepatic fluid, they cannot prove bile ascites. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy with Tc-99m-IDA agents is a physio...

Serum bile acids in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disease.

The value of serum bile acids (SBA) in the diagnosis of hepatobiliary disease has been investigated. A modified GLC method was used, with an overall coefficient of variation of +/- 11% in the control range. Serum was obtained after a 12 hour fast, and two hours after a fatty meal from 73 patients and 14 control subjects. In controls the total fasting SBA of 2.17 +/- 0.86 mumol/l increased signi...
